25-year-old dies in mishap at Metro site

A 25-year-old man died in a technical mishap at a Metro construction site in Kandivali on Friday morning.

According to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the deceased, identified as Fardeen Sheikh, was working as a driver for J Kumar and Company, which has undertaken the construction of the Metro Line 2A, from Dahisar to D.N. Nagar.

The Samta Nagar police said the incident occurred around 2.45 a.m., when Sheikh was driving a spotting vehicle, with a trailer-puller passing close to him. The trailer was transporting a U-girder weighing around 100 tonnes.

A jointing pin that connected the trailer and puller broke, and the U-girder fell on Sheikh’s vehicle, crushing him under it. “The driver of the trailer-puller fled the scene as people started gathering. We rushed Sheikh to Shatabdi hospital in Kandivali (East), where doctors declared him dead before admission,” senior police inspector Raju Kasbe, Samta Nagar police station, said.

The police have filed a case of causing death due to negligence under the Indian Penal Code against the driver of the trailer-puller.

“It is an unfortunate incident. We condole the death of the contractor’s employee and hope that all contractors will take utmost care in future,” MMRDA spokesperson Dilip Kawathkar said.
