A 25-year-old chartered accountant killed himself at Bandra-Worli Sea Link on Friday afternoon.

According to officials, the incident was reported to the fire brigade control room at 2.40 p.m. The Disaster Management Cell of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and the Worli police were alerted, and several teams rushed to the spot.

The fire brigade reached the spot at 3:01 p.m. and also sought assistance from other agencies. Navy divers, two boats belonging to local fishermen and a Coast Guard helicopter were sent to look for the victim.

The victim was found in the deep waters around 7.30 p.m. and was rushed to Poddar Hospital in Worli, where he was declared dead before admission.

The Worli police, meanwhile, started the process of trying to identify the man. “We viewed CCTV camera footage of the spot where the incident occurred and identified the taxi from which the man had alighted. The taxi driver was traced based on his licence plate number and called for inquiries. He told us he was ferrying the man from south Mumbai towards Worli when the victim asked him to stop, saying that he was having difficulty breathing. When the taxi stopped, he got out of the car and, before anyone could stop him, took the extreme step,” senior police inspector Sukhlal Varpe said.

The police found the man’s cell phone and wallet in the taxi, based on which he was identified as Parth Somani. The police contacted his family, who identified his body at the hospital on Friday evening.

“We have not found any suicide note in the taxi or on his cell phone, and the reason behind his extreme step is still being investigated. We have registered an accidental death report for the moment,” Mr. Varpe said.
