15 cheated of ₹13 lakh in holiday package scam

The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Navi Mumbai police is on the lookout for four men who have cheated around 15 people of ₹13 lakh by offering them fake holiday schemes.

The police said that last month the conmen allegedly opened an office, Semester Global Services Pvt Ltd, on the eighth floor of Titanium building at Sector 15 in CBD Belapur.

An EOW officer said, “The men used to contact married couples and ask them to visit their office to earn special gifts. After reaching the office, the accused told them that they were eligible for holiday packages at reduced rates as a promotional offer from their company. They then claimed that these holiday packages were valid for 30 years and they could apply for the offers for eight days every year.”

Interested couples paid money for the packages using credit and debit cards. The accused then told the couples that the company would contact them within 48 hours. However, when the couples failed to receive a confirmation call, they visited the office only to find that the accused had shut shop and fled.

The complainants said that the accused introduced themselves as Vikrant Manhas, senior manager, and the staff members were Naved, Kedar and Kapil. Sandesh Mhatre, one of the victims who lodged the complaint on Sunday with the CBD Belapur police, mentioned the details of 14 people who too were also cheated. Mr. Mhatre and his wife were called to the office on March 10 and he paid ₹95,000 using his friend’s credit card, ₹25,000 using wife’s debit card and ₹5,000 in cash. After receiving no response from the company, the couple visited the office on April 14 and found other victims at the office. “The police believe there are more victims. No one should invest in such schemes without verifying the details.” an officer said.
