Mumbai: A 12-year-old rape victim gave birth to a baby girl at JJ Hospital on Monday.

The baby weighed merely 1.4 kg and was shifted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit soon after. Doctors said the victim has not attained puberty, and it is extremely uncommon to see cases of pregnancy before puberty.

According to police inspector Mahesh Patil, Manor police station, Palghar, the girl had complained of stomach ache for which her mother took her to a local hospital. Doctors there revealed that she was pregnant. Soon, the mother reported the matter to the police and named the girl’s stepfather as the accused.

The victim was sent for medical examination to JJ hospital. A few hours after her arrival at the hospital, she went into labour.

Doctors said there was no history provided by the family, but they suspect that the baby was born at eight months. They said the girl or her mother did not know about the pregnancy till they went to a local hospital last week.
