Unidentified miscreants made away with 10 mobile phones and ₹47,000 in cash during the Navi Mumbai Monsoon Run organised by Inorbit Mall in Vashi at 6 a.m. on Sunday, said the Vashi police.

The miscreants broke the windows of the cars of six participants. The two-hour marathon was from the mall to Agri Koli Bhavan and back, the police said.

Out of the the six cars, four were parked behind Inorbit Mall and two opposite Tunga Hotel. The empty wallets, debit and credit cards were all dumped in one of the cars and only cash was stolen, the police said.

‘No permission for run’

“The event organisers had not taken police permission and hence we had not made any security arrangements. We were not informed about the event,” said Police Inspector Nitin Gite from Vashi police station.

“There was an iPhone among the stolen goods. We traced its location to Thane. We located the accused’s car and when he saw us, he sped away. We followed him till Nalasopara but then we got stuck in traffic and lost track of him. We have also obtained footage from CCTV cameras,” said police sub-inspector Vikas Gaikwad from Vashi police station.

“The accused was using a car which was stolen from Bandra Kurla Complex. We suspect there were two people involved in the theft and one of them was dropped at Mumbra,” Mr. Gaikwad said.
