The malfunctioning traffic and pedestrian signals at the intersection of Anna Salai and Smith Road makes it difficult for pedestrians to cross the stretch.
Anna Salai is one-way till it intersects with Dams Road. Pedestrians say it is a challenge to cross the road as a steady number of vehicles pass through it. It takes more than five minutes to cross the arterial stretch, say pedestrians.
Motorists come at a fast clip on the two-lane stretch to proceed through Anna Salai and towards Club House Road, Royapettah. Motorists swerve left and right around the median near the intersection of Anna Salai and Smith Road.
“Motorists do not halt or slow down to let pedestrians cross. They should stop before the zebra crossing. The signal at the intersection must be repaired,” said R. Jagadeesh Kumar, a resident of Royapettah.
Similarly, motorists coming from Smith Road come at a breakneck speed at the intersection increasing the risk of accidents. It is a common sight to see pedestrians jumping over the median and darting across the stretch.
