Youth brigade raring to go

October 24, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 09:46 am IST - KOZHIKODE:

Very often, the candidates’ list of political parties finds stiff opposition from their youth brigades, for their neglect towards the youth, especially young women. However, such a complaint seems irrelevant considering the candidates’ list of both LDF and UDF as far as the Kozhikode Municipal Corporation is concerned.

There are quite a number of young women candidates in various wards of the Kozhikode Corporation. While some have experience as councillors, most of them are newbies trying to make the best of the opportunity.

“The Youth Congress has worked hard to make the presence of youth felt in the polls this year. We prepared a list of wannabe candidates, got it approved by the central committee before presenting it before the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee,” said Vidya Balakrishnan, State general secretary of Youth Congress, who is contesting to the Corporation once again from her sitting seat, Chevayur.

‘Check on corruption’

She feels that the presence of youngsters in any body will reduce the level of corruption to a great extent. “They will be high on ideology. Moreover, we need more youngsters to keep the boat afloat,” she added.

Saranya, member of the Kerala State Youth Welfare Board, is another prominent young woman in the fray from the UDF bastion.

She believes that young people’s representatives will be more active on field.

K.C. Shobhitha, another young candidate of the UDF has an equally young K.Sini of the LDF as her opponent.

Both are sitting councillors and are contesting from the Malapparamba ward. Sini feels that “youngsters will be able to grasp the needs of the modern age better than the old generation and thy will frame developmental activities accordingly”.

M.M. Latha contesting from Karuvasseri, Sasha.P, Saranya’s opponent at Chelavoor, and Sherina Vijayan contesting from Medical College are some of the other prominent young women contesting under the LDF banner.
