‘Writing off agricultural loans need of the hour’

Farmers to take out march to income tax office on Sept 25

A State-level coordination committee of farmers’ organisations will conduct a march to the income tax office here on September 25, protesting against the “anti-farmer policies” of the Union government.

Ahead of the district-level protest, farmers will attend regional rallies in the district from September 19.

District coordination committee chairman T.K. Rajan and convener P. Viswan said farmers were badly in need of debt-relief measures, and that the Centre should take appropriate measures to write off agriculture loans. The implementation of the M.S. Swaminathan Committee report and fixing of a better supportive price for agricultural produce are vital in saving the community from the looming crisis, they added.

In a statement issued here on Friday, the coordination committee also flayed the Centre’s decision to shift the headquarters of Rubber Board India from Kerala. Rubber cultivators should get at least ₹200 as supportive price, and the board should conduct seasonal procurement drives, they said.

Mr. Rajan and Mr. Viswan alleged that many of the Central schemes were not designed to fit the requirements of the State. The Centre has not even considered the Kasturirangan report, which was prepared giving due consideration to the farmers’ issues, they observed.
