State Women’s Commission chairperson M.C. Josephine has cautioned elderly persons against bequeathing their assets and properties to their children during their lifetime.
Opening an event for senior citizens here on Wednesday, she said the number of elderly people being deserted by their wards was on the rise in Kerala.
Many complaints
Many women were found to be approaching the commission complaining against their children. “This is happening mainly because people are leaving their properties in their children’s name during their lifetime itself. That practice should change,” she said.
Ms. Josephine said the Union and State governments should tighten the inspection of old age homes.
The existing laws for the protection of senior citizens was not strong enough. Revenue Divisional Officers, who were supposed to implement those laws, should ensure justice to the elderly, she added. The event was organised by the commission and the Senior Citizen’s Friends Welfare Association.
