June 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:39 am IST - Kozhikode:

As part of ensuring safety of pedestrians and motorists, all weak avenue trees along important roads in the city would be cleared shortly. A decision in this regard was taken at a taluk committee meeting, chaired by District Collector N. Prasanth, here, on Saturday.

Officials said the Kothamangalam incident in which five students were killed after a tree fell on them also influenced their decision. Officials attached to the Public Works and Fire and Rescue Service have been directed to implement the direction. The security of tourists who visit the beach tourism destinations in the district also was taken up for discussion at the meeting. People’s representatives expressed their concern in the wake of a recent incident in which five members of a family drowned in the sea near Kappad. They called upon the district administration to take all possible steps to avoid similar incidents in the future. The increasing sea erosion threat and the plight of fishermen living close to the coastline also was discussed at the meeting. MLAs E.K. Vijayan, K.K. Lathika, K. Dasan, K. Kunhammad, A.K. Saseendran, P.T.A. Rahim, C.K. Nanu, Purushan Kadalundi and A. Pradeepkumar were present at the meeting.
