Violation of traffic rules: 555 cases registered

As part of its drive against violation of traffic rules, the Motor Vehicles Department carried out checks in the limits of Kozhikode, Wayanad and Vadakara Regional Transport Offices on Wednesday.

As many as 555 cases were registered in connection with the checking of vehicles. The drive was carried out following a directive by North Kerala Deputy Transport Commissioner B.J. Antony in the wake of increasing number of accidents.

North Kerala Enforcement Regional Transport Officer B. Venugopalan and Kozhikode RTO K. Premanandan led the checks.

A sum of Rs 2,63,700 was realised through fines. Those that required legal action would be forwarded to the authorities concerned. As many as 149 persons were penalised for violation of helmet rule, 64 for driving without valid licence and 13 without proper documents.

Cases were registered against 13 persons for reckless driving and against 34 for using air horn and against 32 for various other offences. Action was also initiated against 27 buses.

Enforcement squads will carry out checks in the coming days, the Deputy Transport Commissioner said.
