Two held in ganja case remanded in judicial custody

P.V. Shaji, 45, and P.V. Sunil, 47, who were arrested by the Thamarassery police with 55 kg of ganja on Tuesday were remanded in judicial custody by the Vadakara NDPS Court for 14 days on Wednesday. The police said they were tracking those who helped the two to secure ganja and facilitated its local sale.

The two Idukki natives, suspected to have been in the wholesale ganja trade for more than 10 years, were arrested on a tip-off received by the District Anti-Narcotic Special Action Force (DANSAF). They were found using an altered luxury car to conceal the contraband they had secured from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

The police intercepted the car at Adivaram and seized the ganja which has a market value of ₹35 lakh. It was the biggest seizure made by the police since the launch of the special drive against drug smuggling this year. Sunil, the second accused in the case, was involved in a similar ganja smuggling case in Palakkad district. He was involved in smuggling about 110 kg of ganja.

DANSAF members said they had seized about 150 kg of ganja in various raids conducted in the past two-and-a-half-month period in Kozhikode rural area alone. Last week, the Kozhikode city police had seized 15 kg of ganja in a special drive against drug smuggling, they said.
