Triple talaq row settled

Fathima Juveria, 24, who was staging a sit-in in front of her husband’s house at Valayam here for the past six days ended her protest on Monday after the issue was amicably settled through mediation.

As per the settlement, her husband, Shameer, against whom she had made charges of instant triple talaq, will pay her and their two children a compensation of ₹15 lakh. Juveria, in response, will drop all charges against him and his family, including the ones of sexual and physical abuse levelled against his mother and elder brother.

Juveria’s allegation of triple talaq had drawn national attention against the backdrop of the recent Muslim Women (Protection of rights on marriage) Act passed by Parliament that made pronouncement of triple talaq a criminal offence. However, Shakeer maintained that he had divorced her almost a year ago, before the law came into effect. It was his refusal to pay her maintenance and the news of his remarriage that reportedly forced Juveria to take begin the protest.
