Minister to open valedictory session of week-long road safety observance today

The special vehicle checking drive launched ahead of the road safety week observance will continue in the weeks ahead as part of the stringent enforcement activities even as the week-long road safety observance led by the Motor Vehicles Department and the police will draw to a close in the State on Sunday.

Transport Minister A.K. Saseendran will open the valedictory session to be held at the Municipal Town Hall here at 11 a.m.

Police and Motor vehicles Department officials said the special drive was a success in the district with larger public participation in various awareness events held in the city and rural areas. Unlike the past, a series of special programmes inviting the participation of the general public and students was hosted throughout the week, they said.

Hundreds of stickers of road safety messages were pasted on vehicles during the drive. Students’ participation in various awareness rallies, quizzes and competitions with road safety as the theme too drew wide applause.

MVD officials said that one of the interesting activities taken up during the drive was a friendly surprise checking of vehicles. Those who were found following the rules were offered spot gifts. Vehicle rallies carrying the message of safe driving were also hosted in different parts of Kozhikode district to spread the message.

Policemen in-charge of the mass contact events said there were special awareness sessions for drivers, bus crew and driving school owners.

Medical camps, eye check up camps, awareness sessions on organ donation, blood donation camps and free vehicle fitness tests were all part of the programme, they said.
