The eight men in black, wearing white masks, moved like robots in sync with the electronic music booming in the background.
Amidst executing one difficult move after the other, they picked up a few placards from the ground and used them as props.
The placards carried messages against the use of tobacco.
It was a flash mob with a difference organised by Pratheeksha, an organisation for cancer patients, and performed by dancers from the Flobots Dance Institute here to create awareness on the ill-effects of tobacco on the occasion of World No-Tobacco Day that falls on Sunday.
Though lacking many characteristics of a flash mob, such as the element of surprise, the dancers did well to convey the pain of losing someone dear to tobacco.
The use of a popular sound clip — often used in movie halls on the ill-effects of smoking — however, triggered laughter.
Noted cancer specialist and founder of Pratheeksha Narayanankutty Warrier said that people who used tobacco were 30 per cent more vulnerable to cancer than those who did not. Pamphlets were distributed to spread the message among the massive crowd that had gathered to watch the flash mob.
Pratheeksha is organising an elaborate programme on the topic at the Chamber of Commerce Hall on Cherotty Road at 11 a.m. on Sunday, which will be inaugurated by District Collector N. Prashanth.
