Teaching-learning centre opened at Calicut University

It will develop discipline-specific curricula and learning materials for colleges

Sanjay Dhotre, Minister of State for Human Resource Development, on Wednesday opened a teaching-learning centre (TLC) on the Calicut University campus at Tenhipalam in Malappuram district.

Run by the Department of Education of the university, the centre is one of the seven components of the Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya National Mission on Teachers and Training, designed to “incubate and nurture” discipline-specific curricula, pedagogy, and learning materials for use by colleges and postgraduate departments.

Mr. Dhotre said that the Ministry had sanctioned ₹4.33 crore to the university for setting up and maintaining the centre. “It now has three smart class rooms, a library, an IT lab, and rooms for faculty, research, and director office. A multi-cam studio will be set up soon,” he said.

The Minister said that curricula reforms in universities and colleges had become necessary in the context of inter-disciplinary and applied approaches to knowledge. “The evaluation process needs to be made more scientific to encourage the development of multiple skills of students. Indian universities suffer from poor ranking because of low capacity of teachers, and ineffective teaching-learning and research. TLCs will be of help here,” he said.

Claiming that the present system focussed only on the subject knowledge of teachers, the Minister said that it did not concentrate on the importance of teaching-learning process, pedagogical content, and its various tools. They were very vital to improving the quality of learning experience in different educational programmes, he said.

“The focus on teaching-learning process will engage teachers towards students’ concerns, attention and interests. This will make the educational programme more meaningful and socially relevant,” Mr. Dhotre added. Calicut University Vice-Chancellor K. Mohammed Basheer and P.V. Abdul Wahab, MP, were present, among others.
