With Beypore developing into a major tourism destination, the Tourism department wants to ensure that women travellers are not excluded from exploring it. 'Swathanthra Yathrika' to be organised at Beypore on March 31 is an endeavour in that direction.
“The plan is to explore the possibility of a pilgrim circuit as well as a coastal circuit in Beypore Assembly constituency, at the same time encouraging women to travel and explore the destinations around them,” said Nikhil Das, Secretary of the Kozhikode District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC).
'Swathanthra Yathrika' involves a bike ride by around 30 women through various destinations in the Beypore Assembly constituency, including Feroke municipality, Kadalundi grama panchayat and the Beypore zone of Kozhikode Corporation.
The ride that starts from Gotheeswaram beach will pass through Beypore beach, Chaliyam breakwater, Puzhakkara Palli, Kadalundi Kadavu bridge, Kadalundi bird sanctuary and mangrove forest, Kottakadavu estuary and Calvari Church.
“Calvari Church near Kottakadavu in Kadalundi panchayat has a huge statue of the Crucified Jesus, one of the biggest in North Kerala. There are several such unexplored destinations in the region, which we plan to bring out through the ride,” said Mr. Das. The ride will conclude at the Nallur temple, that belongs to the erstwhile Zamorin family. The ride will be flagged off at Gotheeswaram beach at 9 a.m. on Thursday by Tourism Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas in the presence of Mayor Beena Philip.
The half-day event is being organised by the DTPC in association with WOW (World of Women), a collective of women riders, and the support of the Tourism department.
