Suspects in crude bomb explosions still at large

Rural areas of Kozhikode district rocked by five blasts in last six months; no headway in police investigations

Investigations into crude bomb explosions and unearthing of explosive materials in the politically-sensitive areas of Kozhikode district are yet to make headway.

Though five explosions rocked sensitive rural areas in the last six months, not even a single suspect has been arrested so far. Similarly, there has been no progress in investigations into the recovery of pipe bombs and steel bombs from various locations in the district.

The first explosion took place in a restaurant at Perambra. The bomb went off when a labourer was clearing junk on the top floor of the building. Though the police conducted a probe on a petition filed by the restaurant owner, they could not find evidence leading to the suspects.

The second incident was on the compound of the Chombala police station where a crude bomb exploded when a few workers were burning waste materials.

Though the police were initially accused of careless dumping of seized materials in the compound, investigations proved that they had no involvement in the matter. Both the explosions took place in the second week of December 2018.

The fate of investigations into three other major crude bomb blasts that rocked Nadapuram and surrounding areas in the last two months too was similar. Likewise, the probe into the recovery of highly explosive materials from sensitive locations too ended midway though the police claimed progress in it.

It was on May 3 that the Nadapuram police recovered 13 highly explosive pipe bombs kept by anonymous persons near the Chelakkad fire station at Nadapuram. The bombs were unearthed by a group of construction workers.

Though the police had pointed to evidence suggesting the role of local political workers in the incident, it did not make much progress. The result of the probe into an earlier incident in which nine highly explosive steel bombs were unearthed by local workers from a deserted land near the Kummankode South Lower Primary school at Nadapuram was also similar.

When contacted, a police officer, now part of one of the special investigation teams, said the probe into some recent incidents was in its final phase.

He also claimed that those suspected of secretly storing 13 pipe bombs at Nadapuram would be nabbed in two weeks using scientific evidence.
