A meeting of the District Development Committee (DDC), attended by people’s representatives of various Assembly constituencies, has called upon the government to implement a suitable surveillance mechanism on the accident-prone National Highway stretch and to take legal measures for ensuring adequate compensation for the victims’ families.
M. Dasan, MLA, who moved a resolution at meeting here on Saturday, said the lack of proper surveillance on the busy route had led to frequent accidents. In a separate resolution, the MLA sought the speedy implementation of a rehabilitation package, which was earlier submitted to the government, for those who would have to be evicted for NH-17 widening in the district. The government had promised the evictees a suitable rehabilitation package prior to the launch of the acquisition process, he said.
Addressing the meeting, MLAs C. Moyinkutty and E.K. Vijayan said the people who suffered huge losses in monsoon-related calamities in Thiruvambadi and Nadapuram Assembly constituencies should be given suitable compensation. Several houses and agriculture land were destroyed in the rural areas of Thiruvambadi, Nadapuram, Narippatta and Edachery, they said.
MLAs Purushan Kadalundi, V.M. Ummer, K. Kunhammad and P.T.A. Rahim moved separate resolutions seeking aid for people who suffered losses in the rain.
District Collector C.A. Latha chaired the meeting.
