Kerala has successfully overcome long years of slumber in the Information Technology (IT) sector, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said.

The slow progress of the sector was the result of the opposition by some segments to the development of computer technology, he said, after inaugurating the valedictory session of the Muslim Educational Society (MES) golden jubilee celebrations at Govindapuram, here, on Saturday.

“The State will further flourish in the sector with the opening of new educational and job opportunities for the youth force. We have to move in pace with the times, taking into account the stiff competition from neighbouring States,” he said.

Mr. Chandy said time was ripe for the State to reduce the digital divide by taking the benefits of IT to the laymen. “It will certainly bring them closer to the administrative affairs of the country,” he said.

Stressing the role of educational institutions in the sector, the Chief Minister said the growth in the educational sector would be a lasting asset for Kerala.

“All other developments are temporary in nature and hence, societies like the MES should come forward to help the government in the education mission,” he added.

MES president P.A. Fazal Gafoor presided over the function. Minister for Industries and Information Technology P.K. Kunhalikutty; social activist Sunitha Krishnan; and senior office-bearers of the MES were present.
