‘Speaker’s permission not needed to arrest MLA’

Speaker P.Sreeramakrishnan said that his permission was not needed for the police to arrest or question an MLA, unless the arrest was being carried out within the Assembly building or the MLA hostel. The Speaker’s comment is against the backdrop of the recent allegations of corruption against V.K.Ebrahim Kunju, MLA, in the Palarivattom fly-over issue. Speaking on the sidelines of a programme to honour “Art in Medicine” founder Dr.Mehroof Raj in Kozhikode on Wednesday, he said that no one had sought permission for arrest within the Assembly building or MLA hostel so far and added that MLAs did not hold any special privilege to evade arrest in such cases.

Former Public Works Department Secretary T.O. Sooraj had alleged that Mr. Ebrahim Kunju, who was then Minister for Public Works, had recommended providing an advance amount to a private firm in charge of the flyover construction.
