Six martial arts training centres closed down in Kozhikode

City Spiders crack down on goonda menace

Within a week of the formation of ‘City Spiders’ — a special wing of the city police to curb goonda menace — no fewer than any six unauthorised martial arts training centres have been closed down.

The closure was made after the police inspected the registration details and the qualification and background of the instructors.

Senior police officials hinted that the checking process would continue as some such centres were found to be training grounds for young trainees.

In a few recent incidents too, the city police had traced the involvement of karate and kick boxing trainees in criminal activities.

Poor facilities

During inspection, the police found that many of the illegal centres were functioning without proper facilities. Police officials said these centres conducted the training programme on the top floor of unused buildings and rooms. Karate centres and martial arts training units would be allowed to function only after securing the clearance of the police stations concerned, they said.

Lethal weapons

Assistant Commissioner K.K. Moideenkutty, who heads City Spiders, told The Hindu here on Saturday that the police team would initially hunt for lethal weapons procured by suspected gangs to carry out their illegal business.

The team checked the available police records on people with criminal background and carried out flash checks in over 30 spots last week,” he said.

Some vehicles, mostly two-wheelers reportedly used by hired gangs, had been taken into police custody during the flash search.

However, the police could not net anyone with evidence on their involvement with goonda gangs.

Surprise checks

Meanwhile, the police officers confirmed that flash checking would continue in all the suspected locations under the headship of 10 police officers who are part of City Spiders.

The team would also keep watch on people who were found to have frequent involvement in criminal activities under each police station, he added.

City Spiders was formed on the special direction of City Police Commissioner A.V. George.

The squad was formed with the participation of police officers who are well trained in martial arts.
