Former cricketer and Punjab Minister for Culture and Local Government Navjot Singh Sidhu opened the Markaz United Youth Summit, a UN co-hosted international youth empowerment conference, at Markaz Knowledge City here on Friday.

More than 300 delegates from 10 countries are attending the three-day meet which is jointly organised by the Markaz and the United Nations sub-divisionary committee.

Speaking after opening the meet, Mr. Sidhu said that only energetic youth could tackle the current political and diplomatic issues facing the world.

Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar, Chancellor of Jamia Markaz, said the conference intended to shape leaders who could stand up against terrorism and extremism globally and it was because of this fact that Jamia Markaz, an educational institution, organised the event.

Mani Shankar Aiyar, former diplomat and Union minister, was among the key speakers at the conference.

As part of the conference, discussions were held under seven UN committees on issues including international terrorism, human rights, and migration.

The conference will end on Sunday.
