Row over children’s sports park

School committee to move HC against sports council proposal

The District Sports Council’s decision to fast-track the construction of the proposed children’s sports park adjacent to the century-old Government Upper Primary School at East Nadakkavu is likely to run into rough weather as the school protection committee is planning to challenge the move in the High Court.

At a meeting of the sports council administrative committee recently, it was decided that A. Pradeep Kumar, MLA, would allocate ₹20 lakh and the sports council would allocate ₹17.5 lakh for the construction of the park.

Catering to the needs of children aged below 10, the park will have two basketball courts, two football courts, and a small swimming pool. It will also have waiting rooms for the parents, according to a press release.

K.P. Vijaya Kumar, chairman of the school protection committee, however, said that when land belonging to the school was handed over to the sports council, it was meant to be used only for constructing a swimming pool for children.

Mr. Vijaya Kumar alleged that adults too were using the pool now.

“It is now reported that they are planning to construct a park too there. At a meeting convened by the District Collector a couple of weeks ago, we had informed the administration that we would not allow any more construction in the area. We are planning to challenge the sports council decision in the High Court,” he said.

With the widening of the Mananchira-Vellimadukunnu Road, the school is all set to lose two classrooms and an office room.
