Robbery attempt at ATM in the heart of the city

Fingerprint experts examining the ATM machine of the State Bank of India at its main branch near Mananchira.

Unidentified persons on Thursday attempted to steal money from an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) and a nearby Cash Deposit Machine (CDM) owned by the State Bank of India at its main branch near Mananchira in the heart of the city. The police said the incident took place when the security guard was reportedly at the rear of the building. The incident came to light when the guard accidentally spotted a cloth that was placed by robbers on the ATM counter’s door for interrupting visibility, they said.

Probe on

Though the two machines were found tampered with, no cash was stolen from the spot. On the basis of a petition filed by SBI assistant general manager K. Suja, the Town police has registered a case and started an investigation into the incident. Fingerprint experts and forensic wing also collected evidence from the spot.

The theft attempt was a shocker to the police as it took place in a high surveillance area located close to the District Police Chief’s office. It was also a spot where the night patrolling teams used to camp for monitoring passers-by and vehicles.

Town police said they would shortly inspect the CCTV visuals from the kiosk.
