Kodenchery distinguishes itself from other local bodies by its highest concentration of Scheduled Tribe settlements. Naturally, the electioneering here centres on the welfare schemes and packages for the tribespeople.
The surprise factor, however, is that the situation has remained the same even after a five decade-long administration of the United Democratic Front (UDF).
As usual, political and non-political reasons are projected as campaign planks in this settler farmers’ belt.
Antony Mathai, the incumbent president of the panchayat, believes he has done everything possible for the progress of the 16 tribal settlements in the region.
“We have even attempted to improve the education standards. Those who criticise our efforts should firstly introspect whether we have done anything inimical to the cause,” he said.
Tribal life and development
Mr. Mathai points out that the tribal community has its own way of life where no one can forcefully introduce any change. “Illicit liquor brewing and consumption are rampant in all the settlements. It is a reality that many of the development projects implemented have proved futile due to this trend,” he explains.
LDF leaders claim the condition of around 500 tribal families in the panchayat is still very poor and the projects implemented with much fanfare have been found ineffective.
They alleged that Kodenchery panchayat was very backward in the utilisation of funds for tribal welfare. It has introduced newer schemes for the well-off segment only, they say.
“This is the best time to take a close look at the plight of the Ambedkar colony in Chembukadavu.
Recently, the district administration had to intervene to address their concerns and examine the ailing members,” said Shibu Puthiyedathu, one of the four incumbent LDF members in the panchayat. The UDF can definitely boast works done for the welfare of the affluent segment, but, they would not be able to face the poor segment this time. Even rebels have surfaced in some wards,” he claimed.
The panchayat has 21 wards and the UDF is leading in 17 wards with its continuing alliance with the IUML.
For a change, this time, the presidentship is reserved for women along with the other 35 grama panchayats in the district.
