The city police have launched a comprehensive inquiry into a suspected incident in which 21 girl students of a prominent school in the city were sexually abused by a senior teacher.

City Police Commissioner A.V. George visited the school on Monday and a Woman Circle Inspector was directed to probe the incident in detail.

Meanwhile, the police officials confirmed that there were several “mysterious elements” in the incident, which was first reported to the school authorities in December 2013. An internal probe then had found that the allegations were baseless, the police said.

Police sources said that the issue was now raised by two persons — a former teacher of the school and the former president of the Parents Teachers’ Association. “A detailed inquiry is needed to find out the motive behind raising this complaint after a gap of one year. We have already collected statements from some of the students,” they said.

Activists of various students’ unions took out a march to the school. They alleged that the school management was trying to save the accused.
