‘Stringent action if unhygienic premises are rented out to migrants’

The district administration will intensify pre-monsoon cleaning work to avoid the outbreak of epidemics in view of the Met Department predicting an early onset of monsoon this year.

At a meeting held here on Saturday, shop owners and residents’ associations were told to take up activities on their premises as fast as possible.

Minister for Labour and Excise T.P. Ramakrishnan said action would be taken against those who rented out buildings to accommodate migrant labourers if the premises were found unhygienic.

Local bodies should work in coordination with residents’ associations and take up cleanliness drives. Decentralised waste disposal mechanisms should be set up in each locality. District Collector U.V. Jose was asked to sort out disputes, if any.

The Minister said the government wanted to make Kozhikode a “zero waste” district. There had been a proposal to involve local bodies in the handling and disposal of waste. Trade unions and organisations representing shop owners should extend their cooperation for the purpose, Mr. Ramakrishnan said.

Steps should be taken to revitalise the sale of fruits which had seen a decline in the wake of Nipah outbreak. He also sought the help of traders’ bodies to sort out issues among their members.
