The Election Commission of India (ECI) was not impartial in its action related to the Prime Minister’s appeal to people to ‘dedicate their vote for the armed forces’, Communist Party of India (CPI) general secretary S. Sudhakar Reddy has alleged.

“It was a shameless way of trying to get votes in the name of Army and its sacrifices. This is not expected from the Prime Minister of the country. This should not have been accepted by the Election Commission. Unfortunately, the Commission is not that impartial,” he said while addressing a convention for the Left Democratic Front candidate from Kozhikode Lok Sabha constituency, A. Pradeep Kumar, here on Wednesday.

Criticising Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s candidature from the Wayanad seat, Mr. Reddy asked if Mr. Gandhi chose to commit political suicide, nothing could stop it.

“The Congress chose to send Mr. Gandhi to Wayanad to fight a Left candidate [CPI’s P.P. Suneer]. They are not fighting against the BJP here. What message will it send throughout the country?” he asked. Mr. Reddy said that the Left was not afraid of Mr. Gandhi, who would be defeated possibly both in Amethi and in Wayanad. It would be unfortunate, but there was no other go, he pointed out.

He also alleged that the Congress had failed to build a broad platform that could defeat the BJP. “The BJP will be defeated. The Congress, under the leadership of Mr. Gandhi, however, miserably failed to build opposition unity though it had all the advantages,” Mr. Reddy claimed. The CPI leader alleged that the Congress was pursuing soft Hindutva, which was ‘opportunistic secularism’.
