Police, CPI(M) scuttling NRI’s death probe: Congress

Party to stage dharna near collectorate on July 5

The Congress has accused the CPI(M) and the police of trying to sabotage the inquiry into the suicide of Kannur-based entrepreneur Sajan Parayil.

The party will stage a dharna near the Kozhikode collectorate on July 5 seeking action against those who are responsible for the incident, District Congress Committee president T. Siddique told the media here on Monday. Similar protests will be held in other district centres as well.

Mr. Siddique claimed that police personnel had been repeatedly questioning Sajan’s widow and children and seeking details about their personal lives. “They are now trying to prove that the cause for the suicide was family dispute,” the Congress leader alleged. At the same time, the CPI(M) leadership is trying to protect P.K. Shyamala, party leader and chairperson of Anthoor municipality, whose refusal of permission to start a convention centre reportedly led to Sajan’s suicide.

“A section of senior CPI(M) leaders has now realised that Ms. Shyamala had a role in the suicide. Saji’s widow had, in her statement to the police, made critical remarks about her. Yet, the police are yet to question Ms. Shyamala,” Mr. Siddique said.

The Congress leader claimed that the decision to keep Ms. Shyamala off the investigation radar was taken by the Home Department and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

Mr. Siddique alleged that similar instances of high-handedness by CPI(M) leaders had been reported from Kozhikode district too.

A former military staffer , who had been honoured with the President’s medal, was denied permission to construct a house after he allegedly refused to pay a cut to a local CPI(M) leader at Naduvannur.

His family is now facing social boycott at the behest of CPI(M) activists. At Nadapuram, a local grama panchayat denied no-objection certificate to an entrepreneur citing objection raised by the Kerala State Pollution Control Board. An industrialist at Vengeri too had to face a similar situation, Mr. Siddique claimed.

The Congress is planning to take out a march to grama panchayat offices in the district alleging mismanagement in the allocation of funds to local bodies on July 10. Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Mullappally Ramachandran will open a protest march to the corporation office on July 15 seeking an inquiry into the alleged corruption in the implementation of the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation initiative.
