The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) has intensified its on-road checking in the city to track violation of road safety rules close on the heels of the State government’s decision to deploy special enforcement squads to check accidents under its Safe Kerala project.

Accordingly, two mobile enforcement squads are now in action within the city limits to book offenders on the spot.

“We have already taken action against 15 drivers who fixed unpermitted lights and sound systems on contract carriages. We will intensify checking in such a way to curb all types of safety violations,” said Regional Transport Officer A.K. Sasikumar. “Though the enforcement squads are not operational round-the-clock now due to staff shortage, it will be possible with the sanctioning of additional staff by the government under the Safe Kerala project,” he added.

The special squads are led by two motor vehicle inspectors.

Also, there are four assistant motor vehicle inspectors to assist the MVIs. The squad members have been asked to strictly enforce rules and cooperate with the government’s mission to reduce accident rates by 50% by 2020.

Under the Safe Kerala project, 250 more additional staffers will be appointed to coordinate the on-road safety check.

Their services will be proportionately made available in all districts. The new squads will function round-the-clock and intensify night patrol on all major roads covering national and State highways.

MVD officials said there would be no fewer than 50 such new squads in the State to manage the process after the proposed special recruitment.

The squads will function under the respective Regional Transport Officers, and a convenient shift system will be adopted to ensure their flawless functioning.

They will also be responsible for monitoring speed detection cameras installed at various locations and initiate follow-up actions.
