The National Institute of Technology- Calicut (NIT-C) will launch a new B.Tech programme in Materials Science and Engineering this year.
The four-year course, offered at the School of Materials Science and Engineering, differs from the conventional materials science and metallurgical engineering as it focuses on a multidisciplinary approach. Industry-oriented track elective courses are included in the curriculum and syllabi for the programme.
As many as 30 students will be admitted every year, and the admission is based on the performance in the Joint Entrance Examination (Main). The emphasis will be on materials for emerging industrial sectors such as energy, environment, polymer, and healthcare.
NIT-C officials said the programme was truly interdisciplinary in nature and combines the knowledge from chemistry, physics, biology, and mathematics merged with the principles of mechanical, chemical and, electrical engineering.
The curriculum is designed to make students capable of taking up the present and upcoming challenges in the field of materials science and engineering. In addition to a solid technical foundation, the curriculum ensures the overall development of students, especially in communication, project management, time management, organisational and computing skills.
Students can pursue higher studies in India through GATE exams. IISc, IITs, and NITs are offering M.Tech. and Ph.D in Materials Science and Engineering/ Technology programme.
