New e-toilets to be launched

: Mayor V.K.C. Mammad Koya will declare open the new e-toilets in Kozhikode on Monday. Chairman of the Health Standing Committee of Kozhikode Municipal Corporation K.V. Baburaj said seven of the e-toilets that were dysfunctional have been replaced by units powered by better technology. The remaining eight e-toilets in the city too have been made ready. The five ‘She Toilets’ sponsored by the Kerala State Women’s Development Corporation too will be launched on Monday, he said.

Kozhikode was the first city in the country to implement e-toilets, in 2010. The 15 toilet units manufactured by Eram Scientific Solutions, however, were not readily accepted by the public mainly owing to the choice of location and technical difficulties such as instances where people got locked inside the electronic unit. Add to it non-availability of water and power, and the e-toilets soon became no more than waste of space.

The Kozhikode Corporation was forced to revive the e-toilets following an order by the Ombudsman for Local Bodies to resume their functioning. Though the order came in 2013, it was delayed till now.

The manufacturers, Eram Scientific Solutions, took the revival as a challenge and decided to replace the malfunctioning toilet units free of cost, and with better facilities at a cost of Rs. 21 lakh. Besides, the firm plans to introduce a mobile application to locate the e-toilets and another to track their maintenance. The former application, which is already popular in cities such as Chennai can be used to locate e-toilets anywhere in the country, said Suresh Kumar, Assistant Manager of the firm in Kozhikode.

The seven new toilet units have been set up at Mananchira Square (2 units), Institute of Maternal and Children’s Health in Medical College (2 units) and Medical College Casualty and near Corporation Office on Kozhikode Beach (2 units). The ‘She Toilets’ of KSWDC are located at Kuttichira, Kinasseri, Chalappuram, Court and Medical College.
