The Union Human Resource Development Ministry has promised to expedite steps to construct a new building at Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV), East Hill, Kozhikode, in four months, M.K. Raghavan, MP, has said.

Mr. Raghavan said in a release here on Tuesday that he had held talks with Shashi Kant, Joint Commissioner, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sanghatan (KVS), and B.B.S. Pachauri, Executive Engineer (Works). The officials told him that they were awaiting clearance from the Union government for additional funds in view of the rise in building cost. The MP said quoting Sanjay Kumar, joint secretary in the ministry, that a technical expert committee had cleared the project and it was now before a standing committee on finance.

An action committee of parents had recently sought an end to the plight of their wards who, they claimed, were affected by the ongoing shift system at the school. The system was introduced in October last year after the main building was deemed unfit by the district administration. There are over 3,000 students in the school now. At present, there are two shifts — 6.30 a.m. to 12 p.m. for primary classes and 12.30 p.m. to 6 p.m. for Classes 6 to 12. Though the parent-teacher association had proposed a temporary building on the playground, the KVS is yet to approve the suggestion. The Central Public Works Department had submitted a ₹25.5-crore proposal for the new building.
