The City police on Monday arrested a 21-year-old woman from Thrissur who allegedly abandoned her newborn after delivery.

According to the police, the woman, who works at a food outlet at the Calicut International Airport, deserted the child near a mosque at Thiruvannur on October 28.

She was charged under Sections 75 (punishment for cruelty to child) of the Juvenile Justice Act and 317 (Exposure and abandonment of child under twelve years by parents or person having care of it) of the Indian Penal Code. The police said search was also on to trace her partner who accompanied her on the day.

The woman was identified by the police on inspection of CCTV visuals from the area. She had also left a note with the abandoned baby girl requesting to vaccinate her which helped the police identify the suspect. Also, the police seized a motorbike, which was allegedly used by the two.

It was a group of children who first spotted the baby and informed local residents. Timely medical care was given to the baby at the Government Hospital for Women and Children at Kottapparamba. The mother too was admitted to the hospital following post-partum infection.
