Mini Fablab to be set up at Calicut University soon

A mini Fablab will be set up on the Calicut University campus with special focus on digital fabrication and future technologies. Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the university for the purpose at a meeting here on Wednesday.

A release said the facility would enable students of the university to familiarise themselves with new manufacturing methodologies like 3D printing, laser cutting and electronics production. Saji Gopinath, chief executive officer, KSUM, and C.L. Joshy, Registrar of the university, signed the MoU. Mr. Gopinath said that the mini Fablab would promote entrepreneurship culture among students, alumni and other stakeholders of the varsity. It would also conduct other events.

“The university will provide 2,000-sq.ft. space for setting up the facility with capital assistance from KSUM. The mini Fablab will promote maker culture in the region, and enable students to associate with industry bodies, professionals and other supporting entities to develop their ventures into sustainable enterprises,” said Mr. Joshy.

As per the MoU, KSUM will manage the Fablab for a minimum period of 18 months. During this time, the agency will appoint personnel to manage the lab at its own cost, and the university will bear the operating cost thereafter. The mini Fablab will be open to both professionals, local innovators, entrepreneurs and students. It will run fabrication projects and other training courses to students on a periodic basis. KSUM, Kerala’s nodal agency for entrepreneurship development and incubation activities, will extend the mentorship, technology guidance and connects for the users of the mini Fablab in their domain fields.

It was part of an event organised by the internal quality assurance cell of the university for an interaction between the academia and the industry. The other stakeholders who participated in it were the Calicut Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Calicut Management Association, Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society and VKC Group. An industry-university advisory committee has been set up to take up follow-up works and it will meet once in two months.
