A migrant labourer from Assam, diagnosed with cholera and undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, has reportedly left for his home town without informing the Health Department authorities.

It is learnt that the labourer had come to Melady in Kozhikode district from Mananthavady in Wayanad district for work and was admitted to a primary health centre there with cholera symptoms. He was later referred to the medical college hospital. He is reported to have left on Monday. This is the first case of cholera reported from the district this year.

This man was part of the group of labourers among whom cholera was diagnosed in Wayanad district earlier this month. A team of experts from the regional prevention of epidemic and infectious diseases cell of the medical college had recommended on May 18 restriction of travel of all people who are in contact with those with cholera symptoms for a period of 10 days. The team had also recommended continued isolation of the infected persons.

A senior Health Department official, however, told The Hindu on Wednesday that the cholera symptoms must have subsided in him or he could be fit to be discharged.
