The House Surgeons Association at the Government Medical College here launched a strike on Saturday alleging that the State government deviated from its earlier promises to increase their stipend.

The protesters said their demands had been remaining unattended by the Health Department and the government for the past five months. To exert more pressure on the authorities, the surgeons also decided to strike work on Sunday.

Services offered at the casualty, intensive care unit, and labour wards would be stalled.

“The two-day strike would be a token protest to bring the demand once again to the attention of the government. If this also proves to be a failure, we will resort to an indefinite strike,” association leaders Mohammed Hunais and Aswin Abbas said.

The leaders hinted that they would be compelled to launch the indefinite strike on July 25 if the government did not give due respect to the issue during the Cabinet meeting. All the five government medical colleges in the State would join the protest, they added.
