Master plan on tourist amenities on the anvil

It will focus on tourism promotion with the support of local community

As part of exploring the yet-to-be tapped possibilities of destination development and management, a new master plan for the overall development of tourism amenities in the district is on the anvil with the cooperation of stakeholders.

One of the priority areas is the introduction of a common online booking facility to obtain permission to visit tourist destinations.

The master plan, to be prepared by a team led by the Kozhikode Sub Collector, will focus on tourism promotion with the support of the local community. Accordingly, a list of major tourist destinations as well as those to be developed will be prepared.

An action plan to maintain a clean ambiance and development of basic facilities in all the listed spots will be implemented in the first phase.

Tourism Department officials said the priority areas to be considered during the preparation of the master plan were discussed at a recent meeting of the District Development Committee. District Collector Seeram Sambasiva Rao, who is also the Chairman of the District Tourism Promotion Council, was present at the meeting.

The online booking system, one of the priority areas, will have a single window system to regulate the entry of visitors to various destinations.

If implemented, tourists will be able to generate entry tickets through a special portal by making online payments. Similar models introduced in other States will be studied as part of designing the district-level portal.

Efforts will also be made to develop basic amenities in all underdeveloped destinations. The support of people’s representatives and local bodies will be sought to generate the required funds for basic amenity development. According to Tourism Department sources, efforts will also be made to mobilise the support of interested sponsors.

Along with the new destination development plan, the participation of homestay operators too will be strengthened.

A simplified set of rules on starting new units will be considered on the basis of suggestions from them.

Meanwhile, a few investors have demanded that separate development plans be worked on for destinations based on their categories. Ecotourism destinations should be given special consideration, and there should be interventions to improve safety arrangements, they said.

Some ecotourism destinations have been made part of development projects listed by various local bodies for the new fiscal.

Koorachundu, Thiruvambady, Kodenchery, and Balussery are some of the grama panchayats which have come out with specific action plans to develop the existing tourism amenities in ecotourism spots like Thusharagiri, Vayalada, Kariyathumpara, Peruvannamoozhi, and Kakkayam.
