Malayalam has still a long way go in becoming a completely computer-friendly language, and all those interested in the growth and development of the language should work towards that objective, K.K. Krishnakumar, former president of Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad (KSSP) has said.
Inaugurating the N.V. Krishna Warrier commemoration programme in connection with the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Parishad at the Town Hall here on Monday, Mr. Krishnakumar said Malayalam, like most of the Malayalees, seemed to have fallen into a state of complacency.
“But we have no right to be complacent about Malayalam since the language still has a long way to go to be fully compliant with computer and other developing technologies,” he said.
Remembering the late Mr. Krishna Warrier as a person who had contributed immensely to the “modernisation” of the Malayalam language, Mr. Krishnakumar said what needed was a “continuation” of that modernisation drive for the Malayalam language.
Stating that “over-politicisation” and “smugness” have been diverting the attention of progressive organisations such as the KSSP from taking up the linguistic challenges of the changing times, he said that the State Institute of Languages also had an important role to play in this regard.
“Efforts should be made collectively to make Malayalam as a language competent enough to encompass all spheres of knowledge and wisdom in tune with the changing nature of the technologies,” he said.
Delivering his speech on the topic ‘Science Literature in Malayalam,’ Kavumbayi Balakrishnan, another former president of the Parishad, said that science literature writers had the responsibility of creating interest and enthusiasm in the minds of the readers about the seemingly complex phenomena of science through narratives in a simple language.
