Local bodies asked to expedite work on waste management plants

All local bodies in the district have been asked to complete the works of Material Collection and Recovery Facilities (MCF and MRF) immediately. At the first sanitation conference held on Saturday, the local bodies were also asked to expedite the works of the solid waste management plants as well in order to eliminate spread of contagious diseases and to ensure a clean environment.

So far, only Mavoor, Eramala, Meppayyur, Kuttiady, Balusseri, Azhiyur, Thiruvambadi, Vadakara and Kunnummal are the only local bodies that have completed the construction of MCFs and MRFs. The Vadakara municiplaity received special praise for its exemplary waste management efforts. Kozhikode Corporation and the municipalities of Payyoli and Koduvally need to improve much in this field. Only Vatakara and Feroke municipalities have started work on public toilets. Other municipalities have been asked to start the work immediately as the funds are now available.

The local bodies have also been asked to clean up water bodies on a war footing.

The sanitation conference is a monthly event organised by the Kozhikode district administration in association with various departments to monitor the works related to water conservation, public health and waste management in the district. District Panchayat President Babu Parasseri presided over the conference while Minister for Labour and Excise T.P. Ramakrishnan opened it. District Collector S. Sambasiva Rao delivered the keynote address.

The conference will be held on the 25th of every month henceforth to discuss and implement novel programmes in connection with the zero-waste Kozhikode project. Representatives of all local bodies and heads of various departments will take part. The conference reviewed various sanitation projects implemented in the district over the past three years. The various projects submitted by the local bodies on construction of sewage treatment plants and public toilets besides pre-monsoon cleaning were also analysed.
