Leading students into world of Malayalam

Malayalam will shine in the minds of more students this year as the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) is planning to extend ‘Malayalathilakkam’, a programme to develop proficiency in the language among primary school students, to more classes.

According to sources in the district office of the SSA, they could lead a good number of students to the world of reading and writing Malayalam through the programme launched in the district in January this year. In the initial phase, students in Classes 3 and 4 were covered. In the current academic year, it will be extended to Class 2 and Classes 5,6, and 7.

A senior staff at the SSA said their effort would be to make sure that there was no one in Class 7 who was not able to read and write in Malayalam. The district-level launch of the programme will be held at Payyoli on Monday.

A newsletter published by the SSA said the 30-hour long module was designed to expose students to the visual and musical experience of their liking and make them learn the language.

The students themselves can rectify their mistakes in writing and pronunciation. It could be a learning experience for teachers too as they can utilise their abilities and evolve as a friend and guide for their pupils.

Collective ideation

There is focus on collective ideation as teachers and students join hands to improvise lessons. Individual attention is ensured and the creative capabilities are encouraged. The students are asked to continue the learning process at home too.
