LDF bastion sees a surprise rival

P.P.Geetha, who hails from a family of Left supporters, contesting as an UDF candidate

P.P.Geetha, who has been a dedicated medical officer throughout her career, has always been keen on serving the people.

Her decision to contest the polls to local bodies after retirement will not surprise anyone who knows that it is only the next step to social service. What surprises at least a few in Kozhikode is that she will contest as an UDF candidate while her family is known for its affiliation to the Left.

Dr. Geetha is the Congress candidate in the Thadampattuthazham ward of Kozhikode Corporation.

Her father, uncle and brothers have been strong CPI(M) supporters.

Brother deemed a party martyr

In fact, her brother, Viju, is still spoken of with reverence in Vengeri, as one of the martyrs of the party.

Viju was stabbed to death in 1989 during a property dispute in which some party members were involved. Her father’s elder brother had been imprisoned during the founding days of CPI(M) in Kerala.

Dr. Geetha, however, was never involved in politics, not even as a student.

It was her husband’s involvement with the Congress and affiliated organisations that brought her to the UDF camp. Dr. Geetha’s husband, P.M.Veleyudhan, retired as Sales Tax Commissioner and had been active in student politics as well as mainstream politics during his service days.

“I did not have to think twice when my neighbours asked me to contest the polls. Politics does not matter. It is service that I aim to accomplish,” she told The Hindu .

Dr. Geetha said her family too was very supportive of her entering politics, and had never held politics as a barrier to do good deeds.

Dr. Geetha retired from Government Service in 2011 as District Medical Officer (Homoeopathy) from Thalakkulathur. She has already started campaigning and is ready to take on K. Rathi Devi of the LDF.
