The district government hospital at Vadakara will have gynaecology wards as per the guidelines of the National Health Mission’s LaQshya project that aims to improve the quality of labour rooms, Health Minister K.K. Shylaja has said.

She was at Vadakara on Thursday to open a new building and a blood bank attached to the hospital. The construction of the six-storey building at a cost of ₹13.7 crore is expected to be completed in eight months by the Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society. Ms. Shylaja said that the trauma care system at the hospital would be improved and the blood bank would have new facilities. The number of beds at the hospital would go up from 210 to 250. The services of a visiting nephrologist would be made available.

The Minister pointed out that the Health Department was still following the staff pattern devised in 1961, which was creating difficulties. As many as 504 primary health centres (PHC) would be converted to family health centres (FHC) this year. The Finance Department had given a go-ahead to create 1,000 additional posts at 200 of these PHCs. Dialysis facility would not be introduced at PHCs as it would lead to complications in the future, she said.

At Koyilandy, the Minister opened new gate and a surrounding wall at the taluk hospital. Ms. Shylaja said that ‘Kanivu’ 108 ambulances were a boon to road accident victims. “Around 5,000 road accidents are being reported in Kerala a year. Most often the deaths happen due to the inability to admit the patient to a hospital in time or the unscientific way of pushing them to vehicles after the accident,” Ms. Shylaja pointed out. All 108 ambulance vehicles have primary life support system and trained emergency medical technicians and ambulance pilots, who would administer first aid to the road accident victims and take them to hospitals within 15 minutes. There are 315 such ambulances across the State, of which 16 are in Kozhikode district, she added.
