District Police Chief (Kozhikode city) K. Sanjay Kumar Gurudin has said that action will be taken against illegal lorry parking on South Beach in Kozhikode within a week. Responding to a mass complaint filed by various stakeholders, Mr. Gurudin visited the South Beach area on Tuesday morning and found that the lorry parking there was unauthorised and that it was creating severe traffic congestion and accidents on the stretch.

The police chief said that lorry parking made the place a hub of anti-social activities and created an unhygienic environment on the beach. Lorries were damaging drainage covers and was a disturbance to pedestrians, he noted. After the visit, Mr. Gurudin held a meting of traffic and local police officers to discuss the minutes of previous meetings on the issue and also the difficulties in enforcing the shifting of parking space. The meeting decided to make the South Beach stretch a parking-free area.

Soon, a meeting of all stakeholders, including civic body representatives and lorry owners, will be convened to discuss the possibilities, he said. “I agree that there is no alternative parking space, but that does not mean that roads could be used for parking. Roads are meant for traffic, commuters and pedestrians,” he said.
