January 06, 2015 11:30 am | Updated July 17, 2015 09:58 am IST - KOZHIKODE:

The renovated Medical College ground, one of the venues for the National Games, was rechristened the Olympian Abdurahiman Stadium by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy here on Monday.

The Chief Minister was here for the inauguration of the synthetic track that was newly laid on the ground.

The renaming ceremony was done in dramatic style, with Kozhikode North MLA A. Pradeep Kumar presenting a memorandum and Mr. Chandy making the announcement on the stage just a little while later.

Among those who attended the function were Social Welfare Minister M.K. Muneer, MPs M.K. Raghavan and M.I. Shanavas, Mayor A.K. Premajam, District Collector C.A. Latha and Kerala Sports Council president Padmini Thomas.

The ground, along with the Corporation Stadium, will host football at the National Games, to be held at different places of the State from January 31 to February 14.

Earlier, while speaking to reporters, the Chief Minister said the allegations levelled against the organising committee of the National Games were baseless.

“These allegations would only help in destroying the morale of the officials of the National Games. The allegations are raised by people who did not say anything during the meetings for the National Games,” he said.

Besides football, the city would also host volleyball and beach volleyball.
