Environmental organisations in Kozhikode district have urged the authorities to revoke plans to construct more dams in the State in the name of water and river conservation activities.

Participating in events organised to mark World Water Day on Friday, they pointed out that dams would block the natural flow of water and appealed to government agencies to stick to eco-friendly and conventional methods of check dam construction to conserve water.

A public gathering, which was addressed by leaders of the Kerala River protection Committee in the city, pointed out that the State government had last year given approval for the construction of 52 dams. If implemented, it would prevent the natural flow of rivers, they observed.

The increasing level of water pollution and chemical contents in river water too was projected as an emerging threat at the meeting, which was attended by environmental activists. The recent sighting of blue green algae in the Chaliyar was an instance of the continuing negligence of the authorities when it came to ensuring proper conservation measures, they observed.

Writer K.P. Ramanunni, who opened the district-level convention of the Kozhikode District River Protection Coordination Committee at Mankavu, said Kerala, which was once rich in potable water sources, was going through a peculiar situation where bottled water had emerged as a treasured item in the market. “It was our slips and negligence in conserving water sources that actually landed us in trouble with the looming drought threat,” he observed.

The writer also administered an oath on the occasion. Environmental activists reiterated their commitment to protect the existing water resources and their proper conservation. Madhavan Komath, scientist from the Centre for Water resources Development and Management, delivered the keynote address. Committee district president T.K.A. Azeez and general secretary Faizal Pallikkandy were present.
