Gold smuggling: two arrested

: Customs preventive officers on Friday arrested two more persons in connection with the seizure of 41 gold bars from a gang who carried the contraband in a KSRTC bus from Calicut International Airport to Mysore. Those arrested were K.C. Abdul Latheef alias Cargo Latheef, 52, hailing from Parappanpoyil in Thamarassery, and Rafeeq, 34, hailing from Mudavoor. With this, the number of arrested in the case has risen to seven, officials said.

On Thursday, officials seized the gold bars and arrested P. Abdul Nazer, K.C. Thahir, A.K. Sudhir, T.K. Mohammedali and K. Babu. They were transporting the gold bars, weighing 4.77 kg and valued at Rs 1.25 crore in the market, in specially stitched cloth belts. The team had been paid Rs 1,000 per trip to transport the gold to Mysore.
