GIS maps as development planning tools

Technology aspects to be finalised in a month: Collector

May 12, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:48 am IST - Kozhikode:

Steps are afoot to implement the proposed geographical information system (GIS)-based mapping programme for the city to help achieve development targets effectively.

District Collector N. Prasanth on Monday held the first round of discussions with the officials of the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), government institutions, and engineering colleges.

Arrangements would be made to finalise the technology aspects within a month and bring out the complete map by May-end. On completion, the map would enable citizens to easily locate city roads, government offices, educational institutions, and other important destinations, sources said.

Mr. Prasanth said it would be one of the ambitious initiatives of the district administration. We would like to make results with mass support and not by contributing money to other firms in the name of outsourcing, he added.

In the first phase, a portion of NGO Quarters Road, Mayanad-Velliparamba Road, Mavoor Road, the Chevarambalam-Palakoott Temple road, and the Chathamangalam panchayat would be included in the mapping process. A special android application developed by C-DAC would be used to upload data on each location, he said.

The project coordinators would initially use the services of nearly 300 student volunteers of the Institute of Palliative Medicine (IPM) to upload the data initially. They would be given basic training in the use of the application. They would be equipped to upload area-specific data, he said.
