Gender-sensitive economics needed: Muneer

January 31, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:40 am IST - Kozhikode:

An inclusive way of looking at economics, which acknowledges and factors in contributions and hard works of women including that of homemakers, is the need of the hour, Minister for Panchayat and Social Justice M.K. Muneer has said.

He was inaugurating a seminar on the ‘Economics of Gender’ organised by the Post graduate and Research Department of Economics, Zamorin’s Guruvayurappan College, here on Thursday.

Studies on subjects related to gender are on the rise these days. “But not many of them look into the economic aspects of the gender,” said the Minister, who added that even the peculiar system of calculating the national income followed by the country conveniently ignored the silent but crucial services women do in various sectors.

Economist and former Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac delivered the keynote address.
